Selfie Call Out - Questions Answered!

First of all, a massive thank you for the selfies that have been coming in. I am truly humbled and overwhelmed by the support of the sex worker community across the globe. I really am. Every time I open my email I am struck by the rawness and beauty of the images. They really are visually stunning, emotive and real.  I really would like to help change the cultural visual reference point that pops into the minds of people when they think of sex workers. You are helping me to achieve this.

So many of you are supporters of my work and of what I am trying to achieve though the Masters. I am painfully aware that sex workers are inundated  with requests by photographers, researchers, journalists, students and the occasional pervert wanting a glimpse into the what they think is a hidden  scandalous world ridden with predictable narratives and voices. Its hard not to feel like the main act of a circus sometimes. Thanks for getting on board with Whoretography.

There have been some questions have been asked, so thought I clarify somethings.  Also, if you have any suggestions or thoughts, you can leave a comment below or drop me an email at info@whoretography.com

What type of selfies can I submit?

In order to maintain the integrity of the project, its imperative that I do not influence the type of images you send me so I really do mean its entirely your choice. The photographs just have to include some aspect of self. The can be taken at arms lengths, reflected in mirrors or taken on a timer. The method of how the photograph is taken is not important, it just has to be self portraiture.  They can be ones you use in your sex work marketing or just from your everyday life. Ones you created just for Whoretography or ones chosen from your existing selfie catalog.  You do not have to show your face or nudity if you choose not to but you can if you wish.

What am I doing with the images?

The images will be first collated into an image map. From that I will categorise the selfies and publish a number in a book that will be submitted as part of Cyber Anthropology for the MA.  (See here for more info) This book will not be made available for commercial purposes at this time.  Some of the images will then be featured on this website. There will be a Whoretography Exhibition that will include submitted images at a central London gallery.  If, at any time you do not want the images used then that's okay. You just have to let me know. Ask any questions you want!

If I do use the images you have sent me, then I will always double check with you to make sure its still okay for me to do so.

What happens if the selfies include the images of clients?

I really need to be mindful of the privacy of others and its best the images do not include identifiable features of clients, especially clients. What do I mean by identifiable features? Well,  please do not submit images with the faces of clients (especially the faces not unless they are willing to give me their written consent). Selfies taken in clients homes are also discouraged as are images including wedding rings especially if they are unique.  I have no intention of inevitably outing someone as a client of sex workers because his wife happens to be a photography fan and pops along to the gallery.

I am a sex work client, can I submit selfies?

Yes, you can if you wish. I would love you too but please consider the implications for doing so.

Any questions, just reach out to me.
