The colour Polaroids featured in this book are classified as found photographs. The authorship is unknown, as are the subjects. The once aspiring strippers and dancers remain nameless. The photographs rediscovered at a flea market in a box bought for the measly sum of $10 by Flickr user stripper_polaroids*

He unwittingly unearthed a vault of Southern California strip club audition Polaroids by accident. He then carelessly unleashed them onto the internet without much thought in a rush to share his discovery. Untethered, they have been circulating on the web on various platforms since 2006, with much discussion focused on the identity of the women.

I rescued these photographs from the internet, curated and restored them as an archive then resized the ones selected for this book and returned them to the print form.

The Polaroids date from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The lettering on the white frames was done with an Astro Label maker or marker pen. Included in this book, are a selection of 400 once lost images. They document fashion, interior decor, and a time when bodies were, for the most part, natural and clothed. They represent an aesthetics of an era and lack the naked titillation so commonly attached to the bodies of contemporary strippers.

The years that have elapsed since these photographs were created and the nostalgic nature of the Polaroid renders these images free from the vileness of modern day sex work stigma and body shame. The text included in this book acts as a juxtaposition of the language that surrounds the bodies and our understanding of the lives of contemporary sex workers, in this case, strippers and exotic dancers. You must peel back these vitriolic words to see the sex workers beyond the label whore.
